Cycling, walking and public transport

We're creating more space for people, to ensure everyone has safe, healthy transport options.

Cycling, walking and public transport

We stared down a hostile press and vested interest to deliver over 25km of separated cycleways, over 66km of shared paths and 45km of other cycling infrastructure – increasing the number of people riding, including to work in the city centre each day.

More than 10,000 people safely ride to work in the city centre, the equivalent of 10 full trains or 166 full buses.

In partnership with the State Government, we’ve completed the $220 million public domain works associated with the Light Rail project that our team advocated for in 2004. It has transformed George Street, Sydney’s civic spine, into a tree-lined pedestrian boulevard, complete with paving and new street furniture, and this work is now being extended to Railway Square.

When complete, the fully pedestrianised George Street from Circular Quay to Central will have reclaimed over 26,000 square metres of pedestrianised space including some side streets.

We spend $28 million annually to improve footpaths, lighting, wayfinding, shade and seating and have completed major high street upgrades in Redfern, Glebe, Pyrmont and Potts Point.

Current projects include the $34 million upgrade of Crown Street and $44 million plan to rejuvenate Haymarket and Chinatown.
