Climate action

The City of Sydney is a global leader in climate action – drastically reducing emissions, investing in renewables and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill.

Climate action

We became the first government in Australia to become carbon neutral in 2007. We declared a climate emergency in 2019, and since July 2020, all of the City’s operations are powered by 100% renewable electricity.

We made the commitment in 2008 to reduce our emissions by 70% by 2030. We did the masterplans, set the targets, have taken action – and we met our goal by 2021, nine years early.

We have now committed to net zero emissions city-wide by 2035.

We are the only city in the country to increase our tree canopy cover over the past decade, to fight urban heat island effect.

We have made it easier to walk, cycle and catch public transport, to lower transport emissions.

We have converted all city street lights to low emission LEDs and installed significant solar.

And electrified our own operations and increased access to EV charging.
